Championship write-ups of Smarteyes-Joker

2004 ABC Pheasant Classic/Championship

Dave Tech Ranch, Bonesteel, SD, September 18, 2004, Judges: Truman Cowles & Robert Arbic,

reporter Leslie Andreas – ABC 03/05, pg 12

http://www.theamericanbrittanyclub.org/2004/Writeup.ABCPheasantClassic.pdf

Runner up honors went to Smarteyes-Joker, handled by Jim John, owned by Steve Ralph. Jordan ran the first day under the most brutal conditions imaginable. He had a divided find and a stop to flush as well as a thorough hunting race. We all can be proud of how the Brittany met the tough conditions and handled birds and country like champion bird dogs.

Brace 4 # Upland Acre's Prairie Du Chien ("Shane") Holman & Smarteyes-Joker ("Jordan") John

As we entered the hay meadows (which were just like an old fashioned bird field) point was called for Shane, as he stood in the first ditch. Jordan was coming up the edge of the same ditch and also hit scent, slamming on the brakes. A divided find was recorded. Jordan had a stop to flush on a low flying bird. Jordan ran high and wide, occasionally hanging up on scent before streaking back to the front. He thoroughly checked the creek bottoms in the latter portion of the course, a likely spot given the high winds.

2004 ABC Quail Classic/Championship

Sportsmen’s Assoc., Grovespring, MO, October 2, 2004, Judges: Warren Montgomery & Stan Williamson,

reporter Mary Karbiner - ABC 04/05, pg 19

http://www.theamericanbrittanyclub.org/2004/Writeup.ABCQuailClassic.pdf

SMARTEYES-JOKER emerged the winner from a field of forty-nine starters in the 2004 American Brittany Club Quail Classic/Championship. He ran a smart race with two stylish finds. Jordan was recently acquired by Steve Ralph of Minnesota and was handled by Jim John of Kansas.

SMARTEYES-JOKER (Jordan), John - Temperatures were very warm and conditions dry after out lunch break.  The breeze had picked up a bit from this morning, giving some relief. Jordan launched his effort like a rocket. Jordan covered ground with a flowing gait. He fringed the edges well forward, sighted coming out of a corner and along a feed strip; he disappeared behind a mound in the shadows on our right. Point was called by the scout at 28. He stood with impeccable manners throughout the flush of a very large covey. More birds lifted after the shot. Jordan continued to attack the course showing at the appropriate times, well to the front. At 47 he pointed in a tangle of brush, a single flushed, he maintained his intensity through the shot. Jordan swept the edges of the meadows with savvy, maintaining range and stamina to end the hour.

2004 ABC National Amateur Championship

Blue Mountain WDA, Booneville, AR, November 22, 2004, Judges: Rich Barber, Harold Davis and Bob Reynolds,

reporter Leslie Andreas - ABC 02/05, pg 12

http://www.theamericanbrittanyclub.org/2004/Writeup.ABCNationalAmateurAllAgeChampionship.pdf

In third place was FC Smarteyes-Joker, owned and handled by Steve Ralph, Forest Lake, Minnesota.

The third place dog FC Smarteyes-Joker was handled by his new owner Steve Ralph. This was only the second time that Steve has handled "Jordan", as he is called. Since he purchased the 6 year old male in September, Jordan has come on strong. He won the Quail classic, was runner up in the Pheasant classic, and has a number of other hour placements. Jordan came out of the 14th brace running on course two on Wednesday afternoon. As fate would have it, he was braced with the handler (Ed Tillson) who had actually qualified Jordan for the championship, but Jordan willingly handled for Steve. He put in a solid hour on the ground, with a stylish divided find at 8 and scored on the 109 crossing covey again with lofty posture. Jordan is also sired by Tequila's Joker out of a daughter of National Ch. Microdot.

2004 ABC National Championship

Blue Mountain WDA, Booneville, AR, November 29, 2004, Judges: Bob Bonner, Gary Cowell and Bonnie Hidalgo,

reporter Bonnie Hidalgo - ABC 03/05, pg 8

http://www.theamericanbrittanyclub.org/2004/Writeup.ABCNationalAllAgeChampionship.pdf

In third place was Smarteyes-Joker handled by Jim John. “Jordan” is owned by Steve Ralph of Forest Lake, MN. Jordan is a 6 year old male.

Smarteyes-Joker ran on Thursday, immediately following a short break for fresh horses. Jordan turned in a nice race of all age range for the majority. He was found pointing along the edge near Mario’s hill by his scout at 17. Jordan looked great and his manners were top notch. He made a real nice, strong move down the river, to the woods and around the back side of it. He finished forward at medium range. He backed his brace mate at 41 just beyond the bear trap. Smarteyes-Joker was posted to the board and carried in the Runner-up spot until the final brace.

2005 Dakota Prairie Championship

Dave Tch Ranch, Bonesteel, SD, September 26, 2005, Judges: Ray Trimble & Mary Karbiner,

reporter Leslie Andreas - ABC 01/06, pg 42

http://www.theamericanbrittanyclub.org/2005/Writeup.DakotaPrairieChampionship.pdf

Smarteyes-Joker, six year old male Brittany was the top dog at the 2005 Dakota Prairie Championship. Jordan has spent all of his career on the string of pro trainer and handler Jim John of Yates Center, Kansas. Jordan is owned by the likeable Steve Ralph of Forest Lake, Minnesota, and has been one of the most consistent competitors in the Midwest hour stakes the past couple years. This win is another testament to his ability, as shown by a strong hour of intelligent running with his lone find coming at 57 minutes.

Brace 21# Smarteyes-Joker call name "Jordan" (John)

All age races began at the breakaway for both dogs on the number 3 course. Jordan went racing through a long draw uphill, as far as the eye could see, crossed to the front left to right, and dropped into the cover in the right hand side of the course, always moving forward. Jordan continued to move out rimming all the cover, taking a wide swing around the dam and returning on his own, to trace all the grassy fingers with a strong gait. As we neared the end of the course, Jordan's scout called point at 57. Jordan was stylish and intense, pointing into a feed strip. The first attempt to flush was unsuccessful, so the dog was relocated. He disappeared into the jungle of a feed strip to again point staunchly. Another effort to relocate was needed-this time successfully as a hen pheasant reluctant to leave her hiding place was rooted out.

2006 ABC Pheasant Championship

Dave Tech Ranch, Bonesteel, SD, September 25, 2006, Judges: William Nedeau & Eugene Salmons,

reporter Leslie Andreas - ABC 02/07, pg 38

http://www.theamericanbrittanyclub.org/2006/Writeup.ABCPheasantClassic.pdf

Smarteyes-Joker, with multiple finds on pheasant and a hard driving, smart, forward race. … the finish of dogs driving forward as hard as they started after an action packed hour was a sight for sore eyes.

Brace 16: Smarteyes-Joker (John)

Jordan was on point at 4. When sent to relocate, the bird got up by the scout's horse with the dog uninvolved and not in position to see it. Jordan stylishly pointed again at 8, this time with a well located pheasant in front of him. At 15, point was called by Jordan's scout in the corner of a field down in a deep draw. There was a lengthy delay in getting to the dog because of some miscommunication, but a good find resulted.  At this time the other handler and dog caught up, with Jordan also going to the distant timber with good bottom end.

2007 Mid America Brittany Championship

Branched Oak Trial Area, Raymond, NE, April 23, 2007, Judges: David Taylor & George Langabeer,

reporter unknown -ABC 10/07, pg 16

SMART EYES JOKER owned by Steve Ralph and handled by Jim John took top honors. Jordan, as he is called, ran the first brace Wednesday morning in a light rain. The brace started from the clubhouse with Jordan and his brace mate, taking the meadow edge past the keyhole and out of sight, headed south. When we next caught sight, Jordan was pointing next to the old road bed on Hudkins bottom with all in order. Jordan's next find was in the tree mott in the middle of the west course. Both dogs stayed forward working the edges as we rounded the west course and headed for Pinkerton's crossing. Just past the cul-de-sac on Area 9 Jordan had his third find in a wooded area. His brace mate pointed in the tree line in the south end of the meadow after the first crossing on Area 9 with Jordan backing. Jordan established his fourth find in some heavy bushes just past the second crossing on Area 9 with his hour ending near the old fish camp. Everyone knew the bar had been raised to a high level by this veteran campaigner.
