1973 International Open Brittany Championship
Sno-Fun Preserve, Evans Mills, N Y – Sept 24, 1973, Judges: Truman Cowles and Robert Arbic – reporter Truman Cowles – AF 10/20/73 p 410
Perry’s Rustic Prince was whelped on May 31, 1970. Rick Smith rates him as one of the top dogs he has had in some time. Prince was out of trialing for nearly a whole year after reaching his all-age form and only returned to the competitive scene this September. He had been on the grounds in workouts for nearly a week but this was his first outing where pheasant was the chief game bird. That he developed such consummate skills enabling him to handle them on five occasions during the hour bids well for his total ability as a bird dog. His range and pace were outstanding. He ran with fiery abandon, reaching widely and completing many eye-filling sweeps in his unending quest for game. His first find was a spectacular bit as he reached far across the prairie-like area and stacked up on a rise behind a swampy bluff area. He stood with his head elevated about as far as a dog can reach, giving rise to conjecture among the galleryites that his bird might be in the trees. His brace mate came on in the lower reaches of the area and one bird was disturbed off the back edge of the bluff, but Smith flushed another dead to rights in front of his accurate location. His second find was in relatively high cover of a feed patch, again pointed with high, tight style. The bird was dislodged and ran back past the dog in a furrow about two feet from his nose. This unnerved him just a mite and he turned, made a lunge at it, causing the flush but stayed immobile in his tracks when he landed. At 38 he reached far down an inside hedgerow to register a second spectacular find. On this one he again showed that same sky-reaching head and rigid body and tightly elevated tail stub. The bird was routed from barrier of bushes to his front. Again his manners were perfection. In the last twenty minutes, he found and handled two more birds in perfect fashion, but these finds were right out in front of us, about a hundred yards and not the spectacular variety witnessed previously. He finished his hour with good purpose, probing the edges of hedgerow country and reaching out when called upon.
1974 International Open Brittany Championship
Sno-Fun Preserve, Evans Mills, N Y – Sept 30, 1974, Judges: Robert Abric and David Fletcher – reporter David A. Fletcher – AF 12/14/74 page 841
Perry’s Rustic Prince ran in the first brace, early in the morning while the dew was on, and birds were feeding. Conditions were right, although the wind was already blowing. Prince’s performance left a mark that could not be equaled or surpassed. The dog ran as wide as the terrain would permit, yet he handled, and kept in touch. His race was close to the standard set for this stake…a horseback shooting dog of the highest caliber, yet with more independence. Independence was the keyword in Prince’s case. It put him head and shoulders above a quartet of fine contenders with appealing performances, Prince’s bird work, manners and composure are described in the account of the running, but suffice to say, he was somewhat on the sensational side. This is the second consecutive International Open Brittany Championship for Prince. His record discloses a total of thirteen placements, seven first, including his two titles, five seconds, and a single third.
Perry’s Rustic Prince – Spartan town Squire – Both jumped away quickly. A pheasant came up almost immediately and we found Prince standing. Both were out of pocket at quarter-hour. Prince stopped to honor a wild flushing pheasant, then at eighteen both were found pointing at fence row. They were in great posture, Prince a little ahead, and Squire may have been backing. Squire cast lift nicely after this work and handled pheasant in hedgerow. They went on boldly, and as course turned away, Debbi Smith found Prince in weedy field corner. It was a great cast, and the dog stood swelled on his tiptoes in black ragweed. Rick Smith got pheasants up right in front and the work was impeccable. Prince came in front on his own after huge journey, and soon handled two quail perfectly. Squire, in the interval, slowed a notch, then stopped to flush on a trio of pheasants. In the final going, both ran well, Squire a little closer. Prince closed the hour with a stop to flush.
1975 Texas Open Brittany Champion
Hazelwood, Spring Valley, TX – February 3, 1975, Judges: James Falkner and Gordon reporter Bill Norvell, A F 03/15/75 page 383
Perry’s Rustic Prince handled by Rick Smith, was named winner of the 1975 Texas Open Brittany Championship, the fourth renewal of this stake, staged February 3, at Spring Valley, Texas. Runner-up went to Copper Creek Bobb handled by Jim Holman. This was Prince’s third major Open Championship, quite a feat for a four-year-old Brittany. His owners, Lester L. & Marie May of Terrell, Texas can be quite proud of this dog. Under the expert guidance of Rick Smith, Prince has become one of the outstanding competitors on the circuit. Prince was clearly recognized by judges, gallery and handlers as the winner, so outstanding was his performance.
Perry’s Rustic Prince – Ban Dee, here was the outstanding ground heat of the trial. Both dogs really turned it on and were rolling to the front on the No. 1 course. A pack of four coyotes in broad daylight were jumped first by Prince and then by Ban Dee. After much hard riding by handlers, the Britts were turned off the coyotes and brought back on course. Surely, this would take the steam out of these two dogs, but it only served to whet their appetite to run. At 21 both were found far to the front, with Prince on point and Ban Dee honoring. Manners were perfect although both dogs were obviously keyed up. Released after the flush, they jetted off again, Ban Dee not to be seen again for several hours and Prince rimming the outer edges. At 44 Prince was found on birds to the far front. Prince finished strong and had set the standard.
1976 United States Open Brittany Champion
March 22, 1976, Ardmore, Oklahoma, judges: Eugene Brown & Elmer Pillers, reporter Sam Clements, AF 05/01/76, p 677
Prince, as is his style, quickly established himself as the dog to beat. Both dogs literally blew out of the gate and took the country apart; then at nine Prince smashed into a point on the side of a hill. The dog stood with loftiness and as handler walked in front, a great covey of bobwhites lifted fifty feet away from the dog and history was made. The fog pounded it out with a great searching race for a additional 48 minutes. The end was gorgeous. At 58 handler called on Prince for a sweeping final cast along tree line, he took the objective to the outer most limits, hit the end of it with blazing speed and rolled away youder on the prairie, in plain sight, for the pickup.
1976 National Amateur Brittany Championship
November 16, 1978, ABC January 1977 page 18, reporter Dan Buster, judges Dr. Jack Beck, Tom Fife, Robert Oglesby
“Dual Champion Perry’s Rustic Prince, Lester and Marie May’s six-year-old orange and white of prodigious reputation, handled by Warren Butler, was acclaimed National Amateur Champion of 1976 at the conclusion of the running at the Lake Murray Grounds at Ardmore, Oklahoma, on November 19, 1976. Perry’s Rustic Prince went down in the 28th brace, the second down on the third afternoon’s running. Paired with C Killiam Sergeant Mike, Ike Zamrzla owner-handler, they broke away at 1:57 P. M. Prince broke straight up the course, his swift, powerful movement taking him across a draw ahead, beyond a wide strip of open meadow to heavy jack oak woods 300 yards out. Mike chose to strike out to his left front, this attractive liver and white hitting heavy cover along the lake 100 yards away, then skirting forward along the shrub lined shore. Prince swung along the near side of the timber parallel to the course and both dogs disappeared in heavy woods as the course swung alone the lake. For 3 minutes the handlers rode through heavy timber, singing anxiously, both dogs out of visual contact. At 2:02, the handlers arrived on a wooded knoll overlooking the lake as both dogs came out of a point of land and crossed ahead, as the course swung 110 degrees to the right. At 2:06, point was called for Prince in thinning woods. His stand was immaculate: collected, very intense, head extended, tail high. His handler produced from 10 feet in front of his stand. Manners were perfect as a large covey boiled skyward. Mike was working on around the lake and came around as the course cleared the woods. Through a wide expanse of open meadow liberally dotted with strips of blue stem, wild plum thickets, clumps of sumac and persimmon saplings, both dogs showed heels, hitting objectives as they went and at 2:12 disappeared in heavy woods as the course turned. Prince came out of the north end of the stand and swung north along high blue stem bordering a road, with another section of heavy woods to his left front and quarter mile northwest of the handlers. Mike’s handler had not regained contact out of the woods. Prince skirted the far side of the far woods and disappeared from view going away. As the course turned abruptly back around the southerly woods, Prince’s scout was out swiftly and well within time brought him forward, the scout’s required handling detracted. Mike still had not shown. Prince sped down course through heavy meadow and his handler, anxious to maintain contact, was cautioned by the judges to hold down his pace. Prince cut to his right front up a swale, shifted down as he took the leeward side of a likely thicket of wild plum and scrub oak, then sped on to the lake edge. At 2:20 Mike was brought up by his scout, who took over handling duties as the handler was still back attempting to make contact. At 2:25 the course opened up where a dog was not likely to become lost in the remaining minutes. The gallery relaxed slightly. At 2:32 both dogs slowed perceptively from the torrid paces, having the first positive display of bidability. Both dogs continued their efforts diligently without further game contact to the end of 45. As a member of the gallery remarked, “If we haven’t just seen the new Amateur Champion, we’ve got a helluva race comin’ up!”
1977 Oklahoma Open Brittany Quail Championship
Stillwater, Oklahoma, March 28, 1977 – Judges: Morris Feigel and David York, reporter David York, AF 05/07/77 page 755
Doctor Scott’s Tough Enough – Perry’s Rustic Prince – The latter put down one of the finest hunting efforts one could ask for, his application the best, always to the front and at times out of sight. He handled his find on a feeding covey with precise and mature manners. The work was on what might be termed a “frying pan covey.” Provided the old Remington does not jam or nothing gets in the eye. Birds came up two or three at a time. Five to ten seconds apart. “Prince” stood the test with picture perfect composure during the entire episode.
1977 International Open All Age Brittany Championship
Baldwinsville, New York – September21, 1977 – Judges Irving Clark and Elwin B. Hendrick Reporter – David A. Fletcher - AF 10/29/77 Page 560
Perry’s Rustic Prince, superb six year old Brittany male, captured the eighth running of the International Brittany Championship for an unprecedented third time over courses at Three Rivers Game management Area near Baldwinsville. N.Y. Rick Smith, young Oklahoma pro, handled Rusty to the crown for owner Lester & Marie May of Dallas, Texas. No runner-up was named. He had won the stake convincingly on two previous occasions at Walker Heap’s S’no Fun Preserve. This reporter, who was also serving as judge for the 1974 renewal, will never forget Rusty’s effort on that occasion. It is etched indelibly in the memory bank- a remarkable performance.
Rusty won this stake in convincing fashion also. Rarely has this scribe seen the No. 1 course run so full, so deeply and with such energy and yet with handling response almost too perfect to believe. His single find was immaculate in all categories, and his endurance the full hour was a sight to behold.
Perry’s Rustic prince ran these grounds like many of the professional circuit pointer and setter shooting dogs do it. He was, in my opinion, equally strong to anything this scribe has seen on these courses in shooting do competition. He is a big, strong, physically capable dog fully able to go in that sort of company. Rusty was simply everywhere one could go on the course…as well as all the nearby sections on the course rim. He gave little trouble handling, yet to explore every edge, he had to make many a turn from our course route. Rusty had a superb pheasant find early in the hour. The dog reached way right to road edge to pick up end of a hedgerow (and the wind) and swapped ends into a leaning, stylish point. His cock pheasant was dead ahead under low-hanging brush and the flush and shot were breathtaking.
1978 Michigan Open All-Age Brittany Championship
Inonia, Michigan 04/11/78 Judges: L.V. Marten and I.B. Weinberg, reporter Ronald G. Zollars, AF 06/17/78 p 888
Much good printer’s ink has been poured about the classy orange and white seven-year-old Perry’s Rustic Prince and based on his spine-tingling performance in garnering his seventh title, much, much more will be written about him in the future, and one is tempted to wax eloquent about this fine performer’s past deeds. In the Championship he did it all and ever so well. He hunted far, wide and to the front and always with gusto. He also found and pointed his birds in equally outstanding fashion-with statuesque intensity, and great abundance of style and pin-point location- all of which, your scribe would guess, combined to make the judges’ decision relatively easy. Prince was CLASS in every way! If all of this sounds complimentary, it is entirely intentional and deserved.
And to be sure there is no doubt, the Association wishes to offer hearty congratulations all the way around –to the keen judgment of his owners, Lester and Marie May of Terrell, Texas who are supporting the breed so well by campaigning Prince; to the able tutelage and astute handling of Rick Smith of Edmond, Oklahoma, who directs his conditioning program and who keeps him “up front” for all to enjoy; to the remarkably good taste of Judges Gabe Weinberg and Lee Marten in their selection of Prince as Champion; and perhaps most of all to the Brittany Spaniel breed, which can proudly claim Prince as a premier member of the family. 1978 National Open Brittany Championship
Ardmore, Oklahoma, November 9, 1978, reporter Everett Metzger, judges: Bill Boyd, Don Nicely, Freeman Morehouse, ABC January 1979, page 7 – 87 entries
Dual Champion Perry’s Rustic Prince, a 8 ½ year old scintillating orange and white male, owned by Lester and Marie May of Terrell, TX and handled by Rick Smith captured the coveted American Brittany Club’s Open Championship by topping a banner field of 87 entries in the 22nd running of this feature event at the well know Lake Murray Grounds at Ardmore, Oklahoma. Making his appearance in the 23rd brace, Prince literally changed what might have been the great debate into a unanimously accepted triumph. Up until the time Prince ran and overwhelmed all opposition with one superb find and an outstanding race, there had been several efforts that had concerned owners believing that their dog was tops. Prince altered that viewpoint.
Brace no. 23, Fld. Ch. Scipio’s Mister Chips, Jack Brook handling. Dual Ch. Perry’s Rustic Prince, Rick Smith handling. This was the brace everyone had been waiting for. Everyone who had a horse available was in the gallery. Off at 1:05 P.M. on the no. 1 course Prince went down and up the hill to the right with Chips breaking left, both in big casts that set the pattern for this brace. Neither dog was in sight when we topped the hill and scouts were promptly dispatched to swing them back on the course. Straight ahead to the lake shore with Prince and Chips probing the cattails turning right with the course alone the lake. At 30 both dogs momentarily passed from directly ahead on course. Smith called point for Prince and Brooks shouting the same for Chips. Both were seen standing at the road crossing about 25 feet apart. Prince pointing in to a ditch alongside the road and Chips with his body parallel to the road, but with his head turned left directly in the ditch. At this point some confusion arose. Apparently the three judges, who had placed themselves in strategic positions, failed to clarify the situation. Both handlers dismounted for the flush and went into the brushy ditch and after considerable brush busting and kicking around, the covey was flushed to a short flight. Two shots were fired almost simultaneously. Prince and Chips maintained their style and intensity throughout. Although there was no indication from the judges the general consensus of opinion was that this, without a doubt, was a divided find. Sent on, with the lake front along the left side of the course, Prince and Chips arouse to the challenge. At 37 Chips was found on point straight ahead on course. Brooks tried to flush birds without success. Chips was asked to relocate and made a short loop in a clockwise manner and bumped a covey directly in front of where he had been standing. A most unfortunate situation. At this point Rick had decided to let it all hang out and go for all the marbles. Prince responded and gave as near a perfect last 30 minute performance that this reporter has seen.
1979 ABC Quail Classic
Lake Murray State Park, Ardmore, Ok, Nov 5, 1979 – Judges; Tom Fife and Carl Francis, reporter M.F. Guest, ABC Jan 80, P 9, 64 entries
Perry’s Rustic Prince, nine year old master of the art of bird-dogging, added another to his impressive list of wins when he was declared the winner of the 1979 ABC Quail Classic at its conclusion about noon November 8, at Lake Murray State Park, Ardmore, Oklahoma.
Prince, a Dual Champion, Amateur Field Champion, winner of the National Amateur Championship and the National Dual Dog Award in 1976, winner of the National Open Championship and the National Dual Dog Award in 1978, winner of seven American Field Open Championships and holder of the record for number of All-Age first place wins, is owned by Lester and Marie May of Terrell, Texas.
Prince ran in the fourteenth brace on course #1 at 12:59 on Tuesday. Handler Rick Smith rode the course singing his song and showing complete confidence that his dog would show to the front, which he did again and again. Smith was about to send out a scout when one of the judges spotted the dog on point, about 300 yards dead ahead on course. Everything was in A-1 order here, so those present knew that they had a mark to shoot at.

In Memoriam - Perry’s Rustic Prince
He gave a glow and new meaning - To the word Champion
You see this at a glance - By the titles he earned.
The Britts in this league - Are an exceptional band
Their number so few – You can count on one hand.
Handsome he was on the line each Morn – One blast on Rick’s whistle
And in a flash he was gone - None could match the fleet race
As the birds he found – With Rick in the saddle and him on the ground.
His points were head high – Every muscle rock tight
To those that watched – His manners a delight
As long as there’s Britts – His story will unfold
For his progeny is carving – His name in stone.
As for Marie and Rick – The Brit world grieves with them
But good are the memories – I have of him.
It’s a sad but happy – Song that I sing
It’s of a Brit called Prince – That IS a KING!
Epilogue
Lester clean your gun, you’re in for a treat.
