With great pleasure we nominate Spanish Corral’s Sundance Kid for induction into the Brittany Field Trial Hall of Fame.
In 2010 a friendly young fellow by the name of Joe Gower from Northern California happened onto the western field trial scene with a Brittany male, bred by Steve Cosgrave, who was always in the placements. This was Spanish Corral’s Sundance Kid who continued winning throughout his career with Joe on the whistle. He was a house dog in the off season and Joe’s faithful hunting companion.
Paul Doiron also handled Sonny throughout his career and, from the time he was a youngster to his senior years, Sonny provided him with lots of memories.
Paul remarks: Sonny could be a challenge, but he never failed to perform to the best of his abilities. He was very competitive and had a big heart. As a young dog he would not let another dog get ahead of him; he had to have the front. Sonny ran most of his career on the West Coast, where we were limited to only 2 one-hour All Age stakes per year, winning the Chukar Classic three times. I'm sure his record would have been even greater if we had competed with him in the Midwest.
As a sire, he produced some great offspring and I had the privilege of training and competing with a number of them. They had his heart, drive, style and his intelligence.
Sonny was a once in a lifetime dog and is dearly missed. I would like to thank Joe, for the pleasure of giving me the opportunity to be involved with one of the great ones.
Sonny has made a long term impact on the Brittany breed. His run was extraordinary as was his stylish point with high head and tail. Not only was he outstanding in the field trial world but also in the genetics department! His genes have shown shiningly through his progeny and grand progeny.
His speed, style and bidability are all the characteristics that people look for in a stud dog and he had them!
